Hi, Dan Jones here, host of The Westminster Review of Books, a new podcast where I'll be interviewing authors of the most compelling new books about politics, history, and philosophy. Each week, I'll sit down with a writer who has devoted years to understanding a crucial political question.

Together we'll examine both the mechanics and meaning of political life. How do governments actually function? What drives political change? What constitutes a just society? We'll explore everything from the intricacies of parliamentary procedure to the grand philosophical questions that have preoccupied political thinkers for centuries.

Our conversations will range widely across time and place. One week, we’ll consider the machinations of Westminster in 2025; the next, we might examine how the religious conflicts of the sixteenth century still echo in modern governance. We'll seek to reveal the persistent patterns in political life, the threads that connect past and present.

While our primary focus will be British politics – its history, its personalities, its enduring institutions – we'll frequently venture beyond these shores. Of course we'll look at American politics in this remarkable period, but we'll also explore political developments in Europe, Asia, Africa and beyond.

Why another political podcast? While daily news coverage races from headline to headline, tweet to tweet, books offer us something different: the space to develop ideas fully, to follow arguments whereever they lead, to properly examine the evidence. So in each episode, I'll feature an author who has devoted years to their subject, whether that's a particular historical period, a political phenomenon, or a theoretical puzzle. These conversations will allow us to step back from the day's controversies and explore political questions with the depth they deserve.

I'm thrilled to have you join me on this journey. Our first episodes will be released very soon, and I can't wait to share them with you. Please do subscribe wherever you get your podcasts, and if you'd like to stay connected, you can follow us on Twitter @WestReviewBooks.

Thank you for being here. See you soon.
